What is a Moyen Goldendoodle?

What is a moyen goldendoodle?

Goldendoodles can come in different sizes due to their parentage.

These dogs are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, so the size of these dogs influences how large their offspring will be.

While in America, we don’t recognize a Moyen Goldendoodle, this is a commonly used term in Europe. So, what does it mean? Let’s find out.

The Definition Of Moyen

Moyen is a French word meaning ‘medium’. It can also translate to average.

So, a Moyen Goldendoodle will be of medium size or average size to other Goldendoodles.

What Determines Goldendoodle Sizing?

Goldendoodles can come in all sorts of sizes, such as Toy, Micro, and Standard.

Golden Retrievers only have one size – around two feet tall – so the size of a Goldendoodle must be determined by the size of its Poodle parentage.

Poodles can come in various sizes, so if a Toy Poodle were to breed with a Golden Retriever, a litter of Toy Goldendoodles would be born.

Similarly, if a Micro Poodle was used for breeding, the offspring would be Micro Goldendoodles.

Toy Poodles are around 10 inches tall, Micro is 15 inches tall, and Standard Poodles are around 25 inches tall.

Moyen Poodles

So, now that we have determined a Moyen Poodle is a ‘medium Poodle, we can place this somewhere between Micro and Standard Poodles.

They are around 20 inches tall, so are slightly smaller than US Standard Poodles.

In the US, we would call a Moyen Poodle a Standard size, just a small one.

Klein Poodles

Klein translates to ‘small’ in German, and this can also be used to refer to a Moyen Poodle.

While this is not recognized by the AKC, it is commonly used around Europe and even other parts of the world.

You won’t typically hear about a Klein Goldendoodle.

However, if you found a Klein Poodle, you’d be able to estimate the size of a Moyen Goldendoodle, as these two terms are adjacent.

Moyen Goldendoodles

A cross between a Golden Retriever and a Moyen Poodle is sometimes referred to as a Moyen Goldendoodle or a Goldendoodle Moyen.

There is no standardization for Moyen Goldendoodles, so this term can be used for any smaller Goldendoodle.

A Moyen Goldendoodle weighs around 20 to 30 pounds and many US breeders call this size dog Miniature.

Miniature Goldendoodles vary greatly in weight from 15 to 35 pounds, so a Moyen Goldendoodle would fit into this category well.

What does a Moyen Goldendoodle look like?

Moyen Goldendoodle Appearance

Moyen Goldendoodles will look the same as medium-sized Goldendoodles, as the only thing the ‘Moyen’ refers to is its size.

So, the Moyen Goldendoodle will have a rounded skull and a broad snout, with a fluffy tail and oval-shaped eyes. Its ears will also be dropped.

The appearance of a Goldendoodle will depend heavily on how many genes they inherit from both parents.

Some look much more like Poodles than others, while others look like Golden Retrievers.

Their coat will be dense, but it could hold a number of different textures such as straight, curly, wavy, or incomplete.

It also ranges in color from cream, red, apricot, brown, or black.

Moyen Goldendoodle Classification

The generation of your Moyen Goldendoodle will depend on the number of genes contributed by each of its parents.

It’s useful to know the classification of your Goldendoodle when considering its hypoallergenic status or other characteristics.

F1 (first generation) Goldendoodles are 50% Poodle and 50% Golden Retriever.

F1B Goldendoodles are 75% Poodles and 25% Golden Retrievers.

There are more classifications for Goldendoodles, such as F1BB, F2B, F2BB, and F3.

These all have different amounts of parental breeds in them. The first generations tend to be more popular than the hybrids.

Moyen Goldendoodle Lifespan And Health

A healthy Moyen Goldendoodle should have a lifespan of between 10 and 15 years.

They are designer dogs, making it less likely for them to inherit the purebred health issues that Poodles and Golden Retrievers are often plagued with.

However, this does not mean that Moyen Goldendoodles aren’t at risk of developing any health conditions in their lives.

Common health concerns for Moyen Goldendoodles are

  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Von Willebrand Disease
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy
  • Megaesophagus
  • Ear Infections
  • Yeast Infections
  • Canine Cancer
  • Skin Diseases
  • Obesity

If you are concerned that your dog is suffering from any of these diseases, make sure to get them checked out with a professional vet right away.

Summary

Moyen translates to medium or average in French, and a Moyen Goldendoodle is smaller than Standard breed.

They are the result of when a Moyen Poodle breeds with a Golden Retriever, and they weigh around 20 to 30 pounds.

Moyen isn’t a typical classification used for Goldendoodles in the US, but you can get a good estimate of their size by looking for a Klein Poodle, as these two breeds are similar sizes.
